Robert Glinta had a breakthrough senior performance at the European swimming championships in London when he clocked an impressive 53.43 in the 100 metres backstroke heats. This time now ranks the 19-year-old 6th in Europe across the two length splash and dash. The World Junior champion in this event from 2015 couldn’t however replicate this fine swim in the later rounds as he progressively performed slower in the Semi Finals and Final. Glinta was able to touch the timing pad in 6th at the European Championships final, but his original preliminary round time would have actually won the gold medal convincingly. With this in mind, although it is very clear that Romania have the firepower to score, you have to question whether they can be clinical in the final third.

The older and more experienced, Maria Ugolkova, was also on fine form in London at the Europeans. Her best performance came in 200 metres individual medley where she clocked a 2.13.34 in the semi-finals to reach the final. She came 8th in the final a day later, and repeated the time that ranks her 19th in Europe this year. Showing her prowess in all four strokes in the medley events, Switzerland have a representative who is well rounded and suggests an ability to play against and combat a number of different formations.

Whilst relatively other teams have generally more famous representatives, for nations with smaller populations, they are still represented by some classy athletes. It is a tough call for this head-to-head but with the higher ranking, and although the timing has yet to be at the correct time, it is clear that there is more ability on the Romanian side if they get it right. Therefore…
